More and more we are finding that incremental changes to the make up of a WordPress website can have drastic effects on the website’s performance. Caching, image compression, SVG, the list goes on and on. There are many things we, or you, can change that will improve the speed, and ultimately the Search Engine Ranking, of a WordPress website.
We use many different techniques for our clients, but one we are using more of at the moment is parallel loading of images (along with caching, optimising images, etc). By getting WordPress to load images from a different domain we have seen almost a 50% page speed increase. Using a CDN to load the images is the obvious shout here, but what if the client doesn’t have a budget that can sustain a monthly fee for a CDN? Well, we’ve found the next best thing to be a sub domain. By moving the uploads location to a sub domain we can load images at the same time as the rest of the website content without holding up page loading.
